Lebensrad was published
in Germany by Burk Verlag in 1986. The author is Phoebe Wyss, an
English astrologer then living in Hanover, now living in Brighton.
Phoebe has produced a small edition in English to promote the game
in English-speaking countries, and hopes to find a game’s
publisher who will produce and market it in English.

means ‘life wheel’, because a round of the game
corresponds to a journey round the wheel of the horoscope through
the main areas of life. The players progress through the twelve
houses passing the different signs of the zodiac. It’s
not a coincidence in which house you start nor which planet
you choose. Although planets are picked blind, like tarot cards,
you’re sure to get one relevant to your current situation.
The oracle principle ensures you encounter your issues, and
the statements you get may give you new insights. There’s
also a pun in the title, as Lebensrat, with a T instead of a
D at the end, means ‘life advice’. |

Lebensrad
is both a game of self-discovery and an astrology teaching game.
Through playing you learn more about astrology, more about yourself
and more about others. Every player is a winner because it’s
not about competition but about self-understanding and communication.
Players have an opportunity to share whatever the throw of the
dice brings up, so interesting discussions could develop, or
they can also say ‘No comment!’ The interest in
the game is maintained by the fascinating synchronicities the
dice throws up. There are 1440 sentences on the Task Cards,
and in the course of one game a player will receive only a small
number of them. Yet most people agree that the sentences they
receive and read out aloud are relevant to them personally.
|
The game can
be played by any number of players from one to ten, and individual
players can join and leave the game when they wish, making
it suitable for playing informally at parties. It is not necessary
for players to know anything about astrology to enjoy the
game. However, one player should take over the role of facilitator.
This player, who hands out the cards, should be familiar with
the rules and study the list of astrological symbols and the
table of booster points before the game starts.
Lebensrad is a board
game that can be played purely for entertainment by groups
of friends and in families. It can also be used as a teaching
tool in astrology classes and workshops, and in Germany has
been used for many years by counsellors and psycho-therapists
as a light and informal way to get people talking about themselves. |
